To be a good architect…

….you need to have lived.

The questions that are asked of us require complex solutions, and in order to answer them we have to quickly understand and react to multiple issues at once. The process starts by understanding the events that have lead to the client's desire to engage an architect. What do they need from us and what do they want to achieve from the project as a whole? Then we have to reconcile the client's needs with what is viable within the physical constraints of a site.

The process is never smooth because circumstances are always subject to change. This demands a level of adaptability from architects to absorb changes in direction and continue working towards a solution.

Becoming an effective architect takes practice and a certain amount of worldly experience. The construction industry is a competitive and intricate place that you need to have lived in for a while before it's actual shape is revealed.

Enhance your professional learning by engaging with your wider community. Understand the hopes and fears of those around you, and maybe one day you'll get the opportunity to make yourself useful.
